Marvin E. Newman was a photographer who took thousands of baseball photographs, many for Sports Illustrated during the 1950s -1970s.

The 1964 World Series was the last World Series played at the iconic Sportsman’s Park. Although Cardinals owner August Busch Jr. of Budweiser brewery fame renamed the ballpark for himself in 1953, most St. Louis fans still called it Sportsman’s Park until the ballpark closed in 1966.

All the photos below by Marvin E. Newman are from game seven of the World Series at Sportsman’s Park on October 15, 1964.

Previous to 1964, the last time the Cardinals defeated the Yankees in the World Series was in 1942, four games to one.

Above,  Bill White is stepping up to the plate. Lou Brock, just moments before, led off the bottom of the fifth with a home run to left center field.

The Cardinals scored three runs in the fourth and another three runs in the fifth. The  commanding 6-0 lead seemed safe.

Then In the sixth inning Mickey Mantle came up for the Yankees with two men on and hit a home run deep to left center field to cut the lead in half. Mantle is seen rounding first base with Bobby Richardson and Roger Maris both passing second base to score.

But Cardinals star pitcher Bob Gibson was not going to give in. Though Gibson allowed two more Yankee home runs to Clete Boyer and Phil Linz in the ninth inning, Gibson would win his second game of the World Series. Gibson struck out nine, allowed nine hits and walked three in a 147 pitch, 7-5 complete game victory.

After the final out, all the Cardinals rushed to surround Gibson.

Security was a bit lax back then and as reporters, security and  police try and maintain order hundreds of fans  go on the field to join in the celebration.
