Classic Hollywood #174 – Yvonne De Carlo In Brute Force 1947

Yvonne De Carlo -1947

Though Yvonne De Carlo (1922-2007) had a long and successful film career, many people may not be aware of that fact.

The news slug on the photo says:

Technicolor Queen Goes Black and White For “Brute Force”
Canadian-born Yvonne De Carlo, feminine star of four consecutive Technicolor hits, makes her debut before an ordinary black and white camera in Mark Hellinger’s “Brute Force.” Hellinger’s powerful encore to “The Killers” casts Burt Lancaster, Hume Cronyn and Charles Bickford, as “the men on the inside” and features Yvonne, Ella Raines, Ann Blyth and Anita Colby as “the women on the outside.” Brute Force was directed by Jules Dassin. Brute Force was a major hit for Universal. Burt Lancaster was cast alongside De Carlo again in her penultimate performance playing Anna in the 1949 film noir classic Criss Cross.

De Carlo acted in over 120 film and television roles, yet her performance as Lily Munster in The Munsters is why she is still known today. While other stars of the 1940s and 50s had their careers peter out in the 1960s, De Carlo was appreciative of her renewed fame and the money she received from the show. But she was somewhat blasé about being forever associated with Lily Munster.

In her 1987 book Yvonne: An Autobiography with Doug Warrren, De Carlo devotes less than six pages to The Munsters, much to the disappointment of fans of the show  She also glosses over another major role starring with Charlton Heston in The Ten Commandments.. Other than those omissions the book is an interesting read if you can pick up a copy.
