photo by Marjory CollinsOn December 7, 1941 our country was pulled into  World War II by the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor by Japan.  As January 1, 1943 arrived the United States had just completed a year of austerity and patriotic sacrifice.  Many people realized the grim reality that this war would go on for years. It was hard to find a reason to celebrate anything. But with the world awash in chaos, New York City kids could still find things to be happy about.

In front of Max Moscowitz’s clothing store on Bleecker Street, five boys blow horns celebrating the 1943 New Year.

Photographer Marjory Collins spent New Year’s Eve 1942 in Little Italy photographing scenes at various restaurants. The following day, Collins went to Bleecker Street, taking several photos of these boys with their noisemakers.
