Classic Hollywood #122 – A Kimono Cannot Contain Jayne Mansfield

Jayne Mansfield Busts Up A Kimono – 1957

Jayne Mansfield’s Japanese kimono, no longer able to contain her 41 inch bosom splits at the sides. Waitresses in a Tokyo restaurant take great delight in tightening it around the blonde bombshell’s 18-inch waist. Upon arriving in Tokyo on December 21, 1957, more than 200 photographers mobbed Jayne attempting to get a good photo of her. Never publicity shy, Jayne would allow any photo op. The more pandemonium created, the better.

The Associated Press described Jayne’s racy appearance before 17,000 U.S. soldiers in Seoul, Korea at two Christmas day shows as follows:.

“Jayne almost stopped both shows by parading back and forth chestily on the stage for cameramen.”

The troupe then flew back to Tokyo. Our obviously staged feature photo was seen in newspapers around the world including page one coverage in The Philadelphia Inquirer.

At this point in her career Jayne could afford to rip a kimono. Before accompanying Bob Hope on the tour, Jayne signed a $25,000 per week contract to entertain at the Tropicana Hotel in Las Vegas beginning in February 1958.
