A Rare TV Appearance & Interview With Groucho Marx’s Muse, Erin Fleming

For anyone who has read extensively about Groucho Marx’s life, the name Erin Fleming will elicit a strong reaction.

There are two views of Fleming’s relationship with Groucho. People who spent time with Groucho and Fleming were split as to their opinion of Groucho’s muse.

A wide range of associates and family members believe Fleming was a manipulative parasite who stole from Groucho and abused him.

Others felt Fleming was a true friend and caretaker who helped Groucho remain active during the latter part of his life. Fleming was responsible for encouraging Groucho’s public appearances and introducing his comedic genius to a new generation.

So here is a rare chance to see and hear Fleming with Groucho on the Dick Cavett Show from December 16, 1971.

Groucho Marx died August 19, 1977 at age 86. Before dying, Fleming was removed from caring for Groucho by court order. After his death her life went into a downward spiral. She was homeless and in and out of psychiatric institutions. Fleming committed suicide April 15, 2003. She was 61.
