New Hampshire, A Frozen Lake, A Young Babe Ruth and His First Wife

Babe Ruth At Lake Winnipesaukee, NH – 1916

Babe Ruth and wife Helen Lake Winnipesaukee NH 1916 Hunt auctionsIn this rare photograph the dapper and relatively slender Babe Ruth stands on frozen Lake Winnipesaukee in his Red Sox warm-up jacket. With Babe is his first wife Helen Woodford who was just 16 when they married in 1914. While the Babe may not look very happy at least he does not look too cold.

Babe’s marriage never interfered in his womanizing. His appetite for women was reportedly as large as his appetite for food. By the 1920’s the couple was spending little time together. Because Babe was Catholic, divorce was not a possibility.

Helen Ruth died tragically in a mysterious house fire on January 11, 1929 in Watertown, MA. On April 17 of that same year Ruth married Claire Hodgson who remained his wife until the end of his life.

      Hi Dennis
If you click on the photo it provides the attribution in the address bar, which is Hunt auctions. The notes on the 2005 auction said the photo was “taken by a family friend who became acquainted with the Ruths as they wintered at the Lake.” The date was “circa” 1916 so it may be a year or two later.
