Old New York In Photos #149 – East River & Brooklyn Bridge In Color 1895

The Brooklyn Bridge, Ships, And Buildings Along The East River c. 1895

This vintage color magic lantern slide shows the low profile of New York along the waterfront in the 1890s. We’re looking north along the East River with the Brooklyn Bridge being the focal point of the photograph.

A glimpse of the Hanover Square elevated train station can be seen across from the tall Cotton Exchange building (on left).

New York was still the center of trade and shipping as evidenced by the busy East River waterfront. South Street’s piers abound with ships sending merchandise all over the globe and bringing seafood and other wares into the metropolis. The age of sail was winding down but there are still some four masted schooners docked at the piers.

Besides the Brooklyn Bridge and a few buildings, little of what is seen in this view remains intact today.
