Old New York In Photos #191 – Madison Square Park & Flatiron Building 1903

Madison Square Park & The Flatiron Building 1903

Our stereoview photograph from 1903 shows Madison Square Park looking south towards The Flatiron Building.

A newsboy looks over his shoulder noticing the cameraman photograhing this scene. Nearby, a woman with two children by her side pushes a carriage. Two men walk down a path, as other people stroll through the park bundling up against the cold while others sit on benches.

The recently completed Flatiron Building (1902) is the focal point of this photograph. Though it was never the tallest skyscraper in the city, from its inception because of its unusual configuration the building would attract attention from all quarters.

After being a commercial structure for over 120 years, the Flatiron in 2026 became a residential building with 38 residences. But if you want an apartment in The Flatiron it will cost you plenty. Prices range from three-bedroom units starting at $10.95 million to the penthouse on the 21st floor with an asking price of $50 million.
