Bob Turley Comes Through In The Clutch

Pitching Prowess
New York: Bullet Bob Turley limited the Milwaukee Braves to four hits in the sixth game of the World Series here, October 9, winning the tilt for the Yanks, 3-2, and thereby knotting the series at three games all. Turley pitched magnificently although he did give up solo homers to Frank Torre in the fifth and Henry Aaron in the seventh. But besides those home runs the Braves only managed to get two other hits off of Turley in his complete game victory.

Yankees fans were sure the game six win would lead to another championship the next day.

For game 7 on October 10, Braves star Lew Burdette took the mound on two days rest. What he accomplished was one of the all-time great performances in World Series history.

Burdette allowed just seven hits and a walk while striking out three in a complete game five nothing shutout. It was Burdette’s third complete game win in the series, and in those three games, the Yankees scored two runs against the crafty righty.

It was the Yankees who would have to “wait til next year.”
