Classic Hollywood #142 – Mr. Ed & Alan Young

The Famous Mr. Ed

A Horse Is A Horse Of Course Of Course – Unless You Don’t Know Who Mr. Ed Is

Mr. Ed, featuring a talking horse, was a sit-com success from 1961-1966 primarily airing on CBS.

The premise of the show was that Mr. Ed (voiced by Allan “Rocky” Lane) would only talk to his owner Wilbur Post played by Alan Young. Not even Wilbur’s wife Carol (Connie Hines) is aware  that Mr. Ed can speak. The show’s closing theme song is up there as one of the most memorable of the 1960s.

Though Mr. Ed is still in television syndication, during a discussion with my friend, I wondered if Mr. Ed is still known today and relevant.

My friend works among a staff of people mostly between the ages of 21 and 35 with ethnic and racial diversity.

Asking 20 co-workers; how many would know who Mr. Ed is? Then how many would know another mister, the late PBS children’s star Mr. Rogers?

Out of 20 people, 19 identified Mr. Rogers.

One knew Mr. Ed.

So much for the “famous Mr. Ed.”

During the “backwards music masking” hype in the ’80s, some preacher started playing every song backwards looking for satanic messages. He actually did it with the Mr. Ed theme. And, as you would expect, he found “proof” of the singer boasting, “Someone sang this song for satan.”

Ah yes the brilliant evangelist Jim Brown. He must have been very dedicated to break away from the Beatles, Stones, Led Zeppelin and Judas Priest to work his way all the way down to TV theme songs. Obviously a genius but apparently he was too ignorant to listen to Venom, Possessed or Slayer’s straightforward anti-religious and overtly Satanic lyrics. The hidden Mr. Ed message really messed with a generation as our impressionable government unknowingly sent thousands to Vietnam under the hidden influence of Satan.

Think how the satanic connection claim would be even stronger if Ed was an all black horse…
