Classic Hollywood #139 – Ann Miller

Ann Miller Wears A Giant Hat – 1945

What’s Under A Hat?
If every hat topped such beauty as Ann Miller’s, the male species would probably forget the cracks about milady’s headgear. Who’s going to look at a hat when Miss Miller is under it? She is currently starring in Columbia’s “Eadie Was A Lady.” photo: Columbia Pictures; Ned Scott – 1945

While Eadie Was A Lady was a box office dud, Ann Miller (born Johnnie Lucille Collier, April 12, 1923) did receive good notices for her performance. As a singer and talented tap dancer, Miller’s entertainment career on stage, film and television would last over seven decades.

The plot of a society girl going on stage and hiding her real identity and becoming the mystery star of Broadway is not unique. The best thing the trade paper The Hollywood Reporter could say about the film besides that Miller is worthy of more auspicious vehicles. was that the arrangement of the song Eadie Was A Lady was very good.

In 1944, the magazine Picturegoer summed up Miller’s talents and film assignments: “even in flops Ann is a success.”

Ann Miller best known film performances are in Easter Parade (1948) and the classic New York musical On The Town (1949).

Miller’s final film was Mulholland Drive in 2001. She died from lung cancer January 22, 2004.

And let’s not forget Miller starring in what was at the time the most expensive commercial ever filmed (for Heinz Great American Soups in 1970).
