Historic List Of Every Hotel In Manhattan In 1964

All The Hotels In Manhattan With Addresses and Telephone Numbers From 50 Years Ago

New York Guidebook John KouwenhovenFrom one of the best (and for some reason uncommon) guidebooks to New York City ever published, The New York Guidebook edited by John A. Kouwenhoven (Dell) 1964, comes this useful list of every hotel in Manhattan. We should clarify “every” with the word “approved” hotel and motel. In other words, the flop houses on The Bowery or other squalid hotels did not make the final cut.

The New York Guidebook was published with the 1964 New York World’s Fair visitor in mind as there is a special section devoted to it.

All together there are 183 hotels listed in the book. If you are wondering about the prices, they are not listed. But by checking another pamphlet from the time I discovered The Plaza Hotel was charging from $20 – $34 per night for a double room, while The Madison Square Hotel was charging $7 – $8 per night for a double.

You will note that all the telephone numbers begin with the letter prefix’s such as GR for Gramercy, BU for Butterfield, CI for Circle and RH for Rhinelander. This was because the telephone exchange corresponded with the neighborhood a person or business was located in.  It is a much more picturesque way of assigning a phone number and made remembering the number much easier. PEnnsylvania 6-5000 anybody?

What is also interesting to notice is how many of these hotels are still in existence today and how many which had been in business for such a long time have now vanished.

This is presented as a research tool, but for many the list will bring up a wisp of nostalgia when you see the names Hotel Astor, The Drake, Biltmore and Savoy. I wish there was a list like this available online for every decade in New York City from the 1800’s and on.

So here is our online contribution to researchers or those who are just curious.

Thanks. I am researching a famous photograph and your information helped. It’s so appropriate…the name of your site. I contacted the photographer who took this very famous photo, asking him one question that would assist in the research. He responded with, “Who cares?”

    The coincidence is striking. 🙂

The east end hotel, at least the outside entrance to it, can be seen in the pilot episode of the tv series “That Girl” (1966-71).

The pilot episode is different from the very first episode in that ted bessell who played marlo thomas’ boyfriend throughout the run of the series, plays her agent in the pilot. Also, the pilot was never aired during the original broadcast run. It was added to the dvd release and the broadcast syndication starting in 2012.

My dad just retired yesterday from working at 253 westend ave. 41 years of service. He told me a lot of stories from the Hotel Days. I used to live and work in that building as well, Doorman & Porter.

I’m from India and I found some letters written by my grandad, a physician, who visited America in 1949. He stayed in the Belmont Plaza Hotel, and I just could not find info about it online….till I found this site.

    Thank you!!

Memories of the “free” coin phone in the Wentworth Hotel. Somehow it was jammed, but gave the dial tone and returned coins. Great for changing shoes for my aching feet in my modeling days…

Henry – There is no Hotel Marcy in NYC in the early 1900s that I am aware of.

Hotel Marcy was located at 720 West End Avenue and 95th Street built originally in 1926 as a 318 family apartment – hotel designed by famed architect Emery Roth. Standing 15 stories and costing $1.3 million to build, the original owner was Eugene Higgins.

More of an apartment building with long term residents rather than a short stay hotel. It was refinanced in 1949 and the land under the building was sold. Other than that information, there is not too much to say.

The Marcy was converted to a senior living center around 1969 by The Salvation Army and renamed the Williams Memorial Residence. They sold the property in 2014, for $109 million to Brack Capital Real Estate. The Salvation Army planned to move the elderly residents to a new home they would build with the proceeds from the sale at 125th Street & 3rd Ave, in Harlem. This did not go over well with the residents. “It’s horrible to move at our age,” said Lillian Schafer, 90, balking at the notion of leaving the assisted-living facility to go to East Harlem. “All the way up there? Oh my god!” (editors note – she is correct, the immediate area is a barren and somewhat dangerous area for anyone, let alone senior citizens.)

The state Attorney General blocked the sale, but it was ultimately approved by a State Supreme Court judge in Rockland County.

Can I ask what is your interest in this building?
